Stop Procrastinating: The School of Speed Decorating Has Arrived

Many of us face procrastination every day. I won’t lie, it happens to me with this blog sometimes! I’ve also heard it from readers of SPEED DECORATING, clients, and students in my decorating classes. Hey, it’s our nature. Right?! Well, if you’ve been dreaming about blinking and waking up into a gorgeously decorated home, now would be the time to make that a reality. There are 3 days left to sign up for my new online class, The School of Speed Decorating.

A woman I met at a party recently complained that she had tons of ideas, but after reading my book, she was completely overwhelmed with the thought of decorating. It was clearly stressing her out and as a result, she delayed decision-making.

AGH! This is not what I intended when I sat down to write SPEED DECORATING. As our conversation went on, the prevailing question was, “Where do I begin and how can I make changes ACTUALLY happen?!”

Here’s where The School of Speed Decorating comes in! I want everyone to love where they live, it’s as simple as that. I’ve taken my enthusiasm and knowledge of home decor (and how to make changes quickly) and melded it into a 4 week online course. We’ll take one room at a time. You’ll have checklists, worksheets and videos (from me!) filled with hot tips and advice to help you every step of the way.

The goal is NOT to be overwhelmed and to fight procrastination with all your might. And you know what? The end result will be worth it. I am SO EXCITED to help transform your home. There’s still time to sign up here. Today. I promise you’ll sleep better tonight : )

Back to School with The School of Speed Decorating

Whoa! What happened?! Labor Day is around the corner and the summer will soon be over. I had such a fabulous time on Shelter Island, but with my new baby boy on the way this winter, there is much to look forward to as the temperature cools.

As back-to-school time quickly approaches, I’m excited to share another little project I’ve been working on — September 17th marks the beginning of my 4-week online course, The School of Speed Decorating! I am SO thrilled to share fast, easy and stylish decorating tips that will energize your home in a snap.

Lets make your home a sanctuary of inspired living.

Here’s how it works: at the start of each week, participants receive an email announcing the new module to download. Each module contains checklists, videos and action sheets loaded with professional tips on everything from selecting the perfect paint color to turning your bedroom into a five-star retreat or how to create the ultimate spa bathroom… all without spending a fortune.

You may expect a massage every day with a bathroom like this one.

You’ll learn my seven principles of design, trade secrets and help defining your personal decorating style. And the best part? ANYONE can do speed decorating! I want your home to be a peaceful sanctuary and reflect your personal style. We should all LOVE our abodes and if you don’t, now is the time to change. I’m so happy to share my insider-resources so that you can create your dream home with ease and joy.

I want to help develop and implement your design style into your home!

Start Stripping!

Begin by thinking of your rooms in the nude.” — Dorothy Draper

Whew! Is it hot enough for you? As I think of ways to stay cool and beat the heat this summer, stripping down doesn’t sound like such a bad idea! In terms of your home, let’s discuss how to strip your home to make it feel really, really good. And I mean strip down to the barest bones.

First, envision your room completely bare – “see” its bones and find its curves. Discover the pockets of sun that make a room feel expansive and cheery, find that corner that was hidden by a large, domineering armoire and empty it so that the room feels balanced and graceful.

My definition of cheerful: a kitchen with just the essentials.

Simply put, the more stuff that’s lying around, the more claustrophobic a room feels. When it’s too hot in the afternoon sun, here’s a lil project with instant gratification: Strip your kitchen of tired utensils, dirty-bottomed pots and pans, and dishes in the sink. Make your floors shine so they reflect sunlight and rays will bounce happily around the room. Head into your bathroom and hide excessive grooming products. Discard dingy towels. Dress your shower with a new curtain and hooks. Pull out the paper towels and make your mirror sparkle.

Natural light and a sparkly bathroom mirror do wonders.

The stripping continues in your bedroom (woohoo!). Get rid of all those piles of clothes, books and bottles of perfume. Bedrooms should evoke feelings of love and intimacy, sleep and peace. Whenever I make over a bedroom, I think about how I’d like to feel – safe, relaxed, free and calm. Make your bed look neat, clean and inviting. Invest in a gorgeous pillow and plush linens (see link to JV products) that pull together the room’s appeal. I don’t like to see dirty laundry, threadbare sheets or shoes lying about. Who does?

This stripped down bedroom says “Serenity Now…”

BIKINI BOOT CAMP FOR YOUR HOME

Today, June 20th, marks the first official day of summer. For those of us who are slightly jiggly after too many coffee drinks and cocktails drunk during the chilling days of spring, it’s a time to re-evaluate our bods. Summer is finally HERE. It’s high time we make an effort to look good on the beach AND the hot city streets. A trainer might be just what we need to firm up that butt, those arms and those thighs.

Think of me as a personal trainer for the home. Is your apartment out of shape? I can spot what’s jiggling, sagging and lagging, and make a plan to get it into shape — STAT.

This is especially important when it’s time to sell your home. Recently, I helped a client establish priorities for shaping up her apartment, and she did the work herself. She emailed shortly after to say that people flocked to her open house. She got multiple offers and it sold at asking price. Now that rocks.

Let’s get back to the trainer analogy. The trainer assesses weight, height, body fat, muscle tone, strength and other issues to determine how to tone your body. Likewise, I’ve got a system to evaluate the condition of your home.

Here are a few of my favorite “Bikini Boot camp” tips for your home:

Love your flaws, but show off your assets: When you’re fixing up your home, keep in mind that you want to make people fall in love. That’s Rule No. 1 of Jill Vegas Bikini Boot camp: Make them fall in love. We do this by accentuating the pluses and minimizing the drawbacks.

This living room makeover was somewhat challenging, but like doing crunches, the results were just as satisfying!

Tone up the loosey-goosey: Do you have a broken doorknob, drippy faucet, or squeaky front door? It’s time to fix it. Unattended repairs give a sloppy feeling of neglect to a home, sending the message, “I don’t care.” Would you walk around with a broken zipper, missing button, or busted heel? Of course not! The same is true for your home. It’s important to keep things in good working condition.

Style, style, style: Believe it or not, style has little to do with money. It’s about how you put things together. When you finally get the body you’ve always wanted, would you really put it into that faded salt-tattered swimsuit you’ve been hanging onto since the 12th grade? Heck no! You’d go out and buy a new suit to show off your refined glutes. Likewise, once you get your apartment in slamming shape, go buy yourself a new vase and fill it with fresh flowers. Or buy some new rugs and throw pillows. You get the idea.

Like buying a new swimsuit, only easier! A gorgeous bouquet of flowers available at the corner deli.

Clean, clean, clean: Never underestimate the power of a sparkling clean room. Really take the time to get rid of cobwebs and vanish the dust bunnies.

Use some elbow grease to get those counters clean and polished and you’ll burn calories at the same time. Hey, maybe I could be a personal trainer after all?!

Home sweet home: Home is a primary need. Having the freedom to live in a house that reflects your personality is important. If you present your home in a clean, stylish manner, it’s easier for buyers to see the potential for it to become THEIR new home.

And finally, it’s summer, which means it’s time to party. Celebrate and give thanks to your home for providing you with shelter. Throw a party and invite the neighbors. It’s a wonderful way to acknowledge the good in your life and home.

Magic Wand Tips from Your Resident Fairy Godmother

A dream is a wish your heart makes when you’re fast asleep. Whatever you wish for, you keep. Have faith in your dreams, and someday, your rainbow will come smiling through. No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dreams that you wish will come true—Cinderella, 1950.

Cinderella believed in dreams, but she was also lucky enough to have a Fairy Godmother at her disposal. Do you ever wish you had one, too? She’d throw a little pixie dust around and transform your cluttered, dark, closed-in space into a sparkling, fresh, modern home? One that buyers are frothing to purchase?

Well, let me introduce myself — Jill Vegas, Resident Fairy Godmother, at your service. I’d love to share some of my favorite magic wand staging tips with you.

For starters, clutter eats equity. My client Lisa (not her actual name) lives in a beautiful, sprawling pre-war apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The architectural details are simply gorgeous. However, there is clutter EVERYWHERE, making  it impossible for potential buyers to see the actual space.

A few examples:

-Piano in a narrow foyer = bad idea. This is true for any oversized furniture shoved into a tight space. Hello, claustrophobia.
-An overflowing coat rack with rain coats, sweaters, hats, handbags = visual no-no. It’s a nice idea to have a coat rack but limit it to a few items.
-Closets jam-packed with mismatched hangers and miscellaneous STUFF = no room for potential buyers to imagine their own items in closet. Use one style of hanger (recycle the wire dry cleaning hangers) and remove 2/3 of the contents inside. Nothing on the floors. Leave a shelf empty for the buyer’s imagination.

Re-do the bed. This is an easy, do-it-yourself MUST that will provide a five-star vibe in the bedroom. It’s like swapping out your tired winter jacket for a new summer dress. Breathe new life into your bedroom with new bedding. Pamper yourself with luxurious Italian sheets. Buy a new comforter and pillows for your bed. Buyers will love it.

If you get stressed over what bedding to purchase, I’ve recently partnered with an Italian manufacturer to create my own bedding collection for a no-fuss, no-stress solution when it comes to dressing your bed for maximum resale value. Check out this bedroom makeover if you need inspiration.

Keeping with the de-cluttering theme, strip down your bedroom to the bare essentials — nothing under the bed. And get rid of everything you haven’t used in the last three months by donating to charity. The trick is to figure out the absolute essentials of the room. Everything else goes.

In the fresh, de-cluttered bedroom, such as the one pictured below, the room includes only a bed, a reading area and a nightstand. Keep things open and soft by hanging simple white sheers.

Once de-cluttered, try painting the room. For a dreamy, ethereal sleep, all white can be too stark. Layering-on textures makes the room inviting.

Or, create an instant reading nook. Find a nice chair or bench for sitting and reading, accompanied by a table and lamp. Voi·là. You can stack the New Yorker on the table and a good book or two (my favorites right now are short stories by Grace Paley).

Fresh flowers are another way to bring the summer indoors. They add a burst of color and you can pick them up at any deli or grocery store.

So here’s my advice — if you’re dreaming big like Cinderella but paralyzed at where to start, think about giving your room a quick update. Or, if you’re really stuck, give me a holler. Everyone needs a Fairy Godmother every once in a while.

Behind the Scenes: An NBC Makeover

I was so excited when NBC’s LXTV asked me to do a “day-kover,” which basically means making over a room in one day. I worked with a fabulous crew, and it was amazing to see what could be accomplished in just a few hours. Here’s a peek behind the scenes to see how the room transformation came together:

9am: Call time. The crew arrives to set up props, lighting, etc.

This is what the dining room looked like before — a disorganized room with a hodgepodge of furniture styles:

In preparation for this day-kover, I found lots of options for decorative door accessories at Simon’s Hardware. I wanted to remove the dreary, painted over pulls and replace them with something fun and nature-inspired.

Out with the old!

10am: Hair and makeup (yay!) by the lovely Dana Murcia.

10:15am: Voila! The finished product. And the shoot begins…

My concept  for the dining room makeover was to inject modern rustic glam into an otherwise drab dining room. I used the table for inspiration and created a theme around this piece.

Step 1: Hang wallpaper. My friend, Steve G, showed me how to hang the wallpaper. It’s a faux barnwood pattern that works to make the room feel more expansive. I know it’s possible to hang it on my own, but after watching Steve G work his magic on previous projects, hiring a pro is the way to go.

I’m currently working on carrying wallpaper in my own collection. Click here for more info.

Step 2: Remove the landlord issued chandelier. Here’s something to remember– just because it’s a rental doesn’t mean you have to live with what’s there. It’s YOUR space. Swapping out a light fixture is an easy solution to customize a room.

And just wait til you see what I replaced it with…. I had a crazy idea to create a light fixture that looked like a cloud floating dreamily above the table. So my friend Vince fabricated it for me (also available through my new product line!):

3pm: The day is a complete whirlwind as I pull the room together. I’m in my decorating “zone,” and the crew films me doing my thing. Then, several hours later…. disaster strikes! The vintage mirror that had been originally hanging on the wall fell off and shattered (thank goodness it missed the camera guy who had just walked by). We were all pretty shaken, and wondering what on earth we’d do to finish the shoot. Fortunately, I hunted around the home and found another mirror — the gilt antique look is definitely not ideal, but it works.

4pm: Whew. New mirror is installed. All the details are in place and I’m ready to shoot the afters.

My “day-kover” segment has aired — you can watch the clip here. For a list of all my TV segments, go here.

Spring Color Inspiration Tips

Sharing my fun tips for color to editors at the Momtrends Living Event

This week, I had the pleasure of joining the ladies of Momtrends and several editors in NYC for a fabulous Living Event at the Hotel Gansevoort. Featuring spa treatments, delicious food and great company, I had blast listening to everyone’s design stories and how they wanted to freshen up their homes. As part of the event I also shared some of my spring color trends to inspire and help the editors and their readers incorporate some color into their homes. Here are some of my simple and fun suggestions on how to add just the right amount of color to your life. Also, next week I’ll be sharing the information about my exciting new online Speed Decorating course. Stay tuned!

Shale. This color works in every room. I usually use it in the dining room and at night it becomes a soft shade of grey making the room feel intimate and warm. I like to add a vase of yellow tulips or flickering candlelight — instant romance.

Storm. I love the rain and constantly shifting sky in the spring — this shade of grey looks gorgeous in a living room. It changes with the light— creating a sophisticated and cozy vibe. I mix in accents of blue, green and white to make the room come alive.

You really can't go wrong with Marigold - bright and happy all around.

Yellow Marigold. Spring excites me, especially a burst of daffodils — so happy and cheerful. This shade of yellow brings joy and a fun sense of humor. I really love this shade in an all-white kitchen for a juicy dose of excitement on an accent wall.

Peony. Shocking pink is the perfect way to brighten up your wardrobe — literally shellac the interior of your closet with this sassy shade of hot pink for a feeling of instant glamour. Your all black wardrobe will look amazing against a backdrop of sexy pink.

The gorgeous poppy adds an intimate feel to any room.

Poppy. High gloss poppy red looks ah-mazing in a powder room. I like to add a chandelier and a deco mirror to glam up the space and make it feel intimate and really hot.

Blue Lapis. When you really want to feel like your bathroom is an escape — try this blue for inspiration. Mix in a crisp white shower curtain, new plush towels. Draw a decadent bath and all stress melts away….

Decorators White. This is the perfect white. It’s crisp and clean and looks stunning paired with a bright jewel tone.

Pushing Positive

Pushing Positive

There never was a house so bad that it couldn’t be made over into something worthwhile. – Elsie de Wolfe

The Inspiration.
The fabulous Elsie de Wolfe wrote, “I think it will give you as great a satisfaction to re-arrange your house with what you have. The results may not be so charming, but you can learn by them.”

The Challenge.
Last Saturday my friend, Barry, the miracle worker, came over to help gussy up my home working with what I already had. Even a PRO needs help seeing a room with a fresh perspective, and that person should not be your spouse. Just saying. We completely transformed my space in a day and the only thing I spent money on was $43 at the hardware store for bulbs, light, globe, extension cord, and closet rod. Ah-mazing!

living room before— what a sad, chaotic, space.

The result.

So I was all revved up to share all the photos (before and after) and then when I went to download them on my computer (I decided to use my fancy camera instead of my iphone) and accidentally deleted all the pics. Nuts! Okay so I’ll just list all the projects that I highly recommend tackling because seriously, you can do them in a day. One. Day!

living room after - cozy, bright seating areas in a warm, welcoming space.

One Day.
This is it! It’s time to j’love your home, no matter what. No excuses. Never complain, never explain. I’m pushing the positive so that everyone has a home that they love. Just because you don’t live in your dream home or whatever silly excuse you have, doesn’t mean you have to live in squalor (clutter!). Create beauty with what you have right now.

Here’s a list of things that can be done in ONE day:

  1. Go shopping in your house. We “shopped” the other rooms in the house to create 3 areas. #1 “social” seating area with white sofa, coffee table, rug, floor lamp, side table. #2 “lounge” seating area with Eames lounge and ottoman, hung a brass light fixture. #3 kid’s play area with a rug, play table, and just moved all the toys into this space.
  2. Park the toys in a “garage.” Toys should not dominate the adult areas of the house. Clear out a utility closet, outfit it with fun posters, hooks to hang toys, and install an inexpensive LED closet light w/a five-minute timer to create a space just for the toys. At the end of the day, simply make sure the toys are all put away and shut the door. Bam. Children love small spaces and will have fun hiding out in their “garage.”
  3. Hang a mirror. My favorite places to hang a mirror is in a dark corner to bring in natural light and also make the room feel more expansive. Another great place to hang a large mirror is in the dining room right by the table. It’ll pick up ambient candle light for a romantic feeling whether you’re having a dinner party or dining solo.
  4. Re-hang (or hang) all the artwork. Take down all the art and see what you have. You might be surprised and find something you really love and decide to hang it in a new space. Get rid of artwork that you don’t like. Hanging artwork brings character and personality to a room.
  5. Go for small. Instead of hanging a large statement piece in the foyer try a series of smaller prints installed as a horizontal line to make the room feel bigger. In this foyer we hung 12 small paintings on 4 walls at the same height.

foyer installation. hang a series of smaller paintings instead of one large statement piece.

Never Complain, Never Explain

365 days with the first lady of decoration, Elsie de Wolfe

New Year, New Project
The House in Good Taste
. Published 1913. The first book on interior decoration by Elsie de Wolfe. She was the first lady of interior decoration, a legend, an icon of 20th Century style and glamour. Elsie taught all the  Great Designers — Tony Duquette, Albert Hadley, Cecil Beaton — how to decorate with a fresh fun perspective and most importantly, how to live: “Never complain, never explain” which Elsie embroidered on plump little pillows that punctuated her sofas and chairs. Love.

The challenge
This is the 100 year countdown — which I’m taking on chapter by chapter  (there are 20) and will share inspiration, tips, ideas found in Elsie’s book. The idea is to make it new. But the challenge is, can I do it? Will I do it? I’ll do my best!  Stay tuned…. in the meantime I DO promise to never complain, never explain!
